Inspector
Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia has worked in education for over 20 years. She is currently a full Professor of Teacher Education and the Coordinator of the Literacy Minor at the University of the Incarnate Word where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in elementary literacy and special education. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Literacy and an added 18 hours in Special Education from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Dr. Grote-Garcia also earned a Master’s degree in Reading and a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies from that same institution.
Prior to teaching in higher education, Dr. Grote-Garcia worked as a Reading Specialist and Dyslexia Coordinator for grades K-5 in South Texas schools. She is a certified Reading Specialist and Master Reading Teacher and has had the opportunity to be trained in diagnostic assessments for dyslexia identification at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She continues to use that experience while serving as a literacy consultant to elementary schools in the San Antonio area.
Dr. Grote-Garcia has been recognized by her university and other organizations for her innovative teaching practices. From her institution, she has been awarded the Provost’s Legacy Teaching Award, the Sr. Margaret Rose Palmer Award for Education, and the Sister Theophane Power Endowed Chair in Education. Outside of her institution she has been recognized for exemplary faculty practices by the Quest for Quality: Teacher Preparation in Texas and has been nominated for the Jerry John’s Outstanding Teacher Educator Award. She is co-founder of the Texas Association for Literacy (TALE) and Past-President of the Specialized Literacy Professionals.
